The article provides a theoretical and methodological analysis of the essence, content, and features of social entrepreneurship as a specific type of economic activity aimed at addressing urgent socio-economic issues. The relevance of the research is justified by society’s need for practical solutions to pressing social and economic challenges, particularly in the context of contemporary crises, war, and post-war reconstruction in Ukraine. Social enterprises effectively address those societal issues that are often overlooked by the public sector due to limited resources or rigid mechanisms and by private businesses because of low economic attractiveness. The study identifies the essential characteristics distinguishing social enterprises from traditional business entities, including a clearly defined social mission, implementation of social innovations, creative entrepreneurial approaches, active community engagement in decision-making, democratic governance, entrepreneurial creativity, and a commitment to measurable social impact. It emphasizes that profit in social entrepreneurship serves primarily as a resource to sustain and expand enterprise activities or support socially beneficial projects. Furthermore, the article systematizes existing classifications of social enterprises, particularly by the level of integration between social programs and business processes (embedded, integrated, and external social enterprises), orientation towards social mission, organizational forms, and profitability versus social impact. It also outlines the main areas of social enterprises’ activities, such as socio-economic integration of vulnerable populations, social and public services provision, strengthening democracy and civic rights, and environmental protection initiatives. The author concludes that social entrepreneurship is a promising instrument for achieving sustainable and significant social outcomes. Understanding its core principles and mechanisms can serve as a methodological foundation for developing practical recommendations to promote social entrepreneurship in Ukraine, particularly in addressing the consequences of the war and facilitating post-war recovery and development.
