The article summarizes scientific approaches to defining the essence of tourist destinations and their role in regional tourism development. The relevance of the study is conditioned by the growing importance of the tourism and recreation sector in regional economies, as well as the need for the rational use of natural resource potential amid increasing anthropogenic pressure and environmental challenges. The aim of the article is to study the natural and recreational potential of the Carpathian region as a basis for the formation of tourist and recreational destinations and to substantiate directions for its effective use. The study employs general scientific and specialized methods, including analysis and synthesis, comparison, and generalization, as well as systemic and resource-territorial approaches, thereby enabling a comprehensive assessment of the region’s natural resources and their impact on tourism development. Attention is paid to natural resource potential as a fundamental basis for the formation of tourist and recreational destinations. The natural and recreational potential of the Carpathian region is analyzed, including its landscape diversity, forest resources, water bodies, and balneological assets, which create favorable conditions for the development of health and active tourism. It is established that the region’s potential is significant but varies across its administrative areas, which determines their tourism specialization and opportunities for various recreational activities. The study substantiates the role of natural resources in shaping tourism products and enhancing destination competitiveness. Key problems in the effective use of the potential are identified, including environmental risks, uneven resource development, insufficient infrastructure, and the need to implement sustainable development principles. The paper proposes directions for the rational use of natural resources and the development of tourist and recreational destinations based on ecological balance.
