The purpose of this article is to assess the energy potential of the woodworking industry in Ukraine and other countries. The basis for expanding the use of wood energy potential in Ukraine is: the availability of resources; developed production in the woodworking (and furniture) industries; and the possibility of increasing the use of woodworking waste, namely waste from the production and processing of wood and wood products (chunks, trimmings, sawdust, chips, wood shavings, sawdust, bark residues, etc.) for the production of biofuel.  According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global trends in logging, wood processing, and the use of wood as fuel have been assessed based on the following indicators: forest cover, wood production, the share of fuel wood in wood production, wood pellet production, volume of wood briquette and other agglomerate production. The study showed that in the period 2013–2023, global forestry had a stable but uneven trend in the use of wood energy potential. An analysis of global trends in logging, wood processing, and the use of wood as fuel revealed discrepancies in global trends in the rate of change in the share of fuel wood, wood pellets, and briquettes production. With one of the highest shares of fuel wood in total wood production, Ukraine produces fuel briquettes at a rate comparable to Germany, but almost seven times less wood pellets. It has been determined that state support for the following projects will contribute to increasing the use of the energy potential of the woodworking industry in Ukraine: production of biofuels; use of biomass (pellets, briquettes, wood chips) in centralized heat supply; installation of boiler rooms running on alternative fuels (in particular, biofuels); creation of distributed decentralized generation based on renewable energy sources, including biomass; manufacture of heating equipment that runs on biomass (e.g., solid fuel pellet boilers), etc., which will ensure the country’s energy security.

Keywords: woodworking industry, energy potential, biofuel, wood pellets and briquettes, waste, circular economy, state support, project.
