The article examines the essence of the concepts of “needs”, “interest”, and “motive”. It is established that each employee has his motives, which perform specific functions: orienting, essential, motivating, coordinating, and socially directive. The content and meaning of the tasks performed by motives are considered. Various definitions of the concept of “motivation” are analyzed based on the analysis of information sources. Summarizing these definitions, they were systematized according to the following approaches: the essence of motivation in the general sense, depending on human behavior and by the sphere of management. The dynamics of the number of operating banks in Ukraine and the dynamics of the net profit (loss) of Ukrainian commercial banks are considered. It is established that since the primary resource at the expense of which the effective activity of banks is carried out is human resources, the management should pay significant attention to staff motivation, which should include a combination of both material and non-material motivation. A recommended list of possible measures for commercial banks’ material and non-material staff motivation in Ukraine is given. The components of external and internal staff motivation are characterized. It has been established that the combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation will help encourage and motivate employees to satisfy their needs through high performance. Each commercial bank uses its own staff motivation system, which has advantages and disadvantages. It is proven that the disadvantages hinder the realization of the potential of employees and slow down the development of banks. A list of tasks that the system of staff motivation of commercial banks should include at each stage of its formation in the conditions of modern challenges has been developed. It has been established that compliance with this list will allow commercial banks to ensure that each employee works with maximum dedication and efficiency.
